Pathogenic noroviruses have been identified in shellfish from various countries in Europe. The major cause of outbreaks of acute gastroenteritis in humans, norovirus infection is transmitted three main ways, led by consumption of shellfish.

Epidemiological studies have estimated that noroviruses are responsible for 60 percent to 80 percent of all foodborne outbreaks of gastroenteritis worldwide. Consumption of shellfish is one of three main transmission routes of norovirus infection.

Greece’s mussel aquaculture combines traditional hanging park culture with newer long-line methods. The traditional farms are generally family-run operations located in shallow, near-shore waters.

Turkey has many kilometers of coastline, but shellfish culture is developing slowly in the country. Only two bivalve farms producing mussels presently operate there. Mussel spat is collected naturally on the long line systems.

The main reason for recent declines in blue mussel yields in the Netherlands was lower availability of mussel seed. Mild winters have increased the number of predators, which can decimate mussel stocks.
Intelligence
Most of the shellfish industry in Portugal is located on the country’s southern coast, where the production is dominated by the grooved carpet shell clam, followed by Japanese and Portuguese cupped oysters, and mussels.
Responsibility
A project in Canada is assessing the industrial potential for integrated multitrophic aquaculture in raising kelps and blue mussels along with salmon.
